Windows 8 – The Future of Mobile Computing Platform

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

The new Windows 8 operating system is a real shift from the traditional versions of Operating Systems from Microsoft. It is more kind of a touch screen related system that is suitable for tablets and normal PCs.  This could also mean that more devices, be it either desktops or portables would be thinking about incorporating the touch screen technology in the coming years of technological developments.

With this latest release of the Operating System, there has been a considerable amount of concern among the users as whether the Windows 8 version will be Smartphone oriented. It is in a way true that the new Operating System shares the design strategies adopted for Windows Phone 8. Let’s now together explore some of the features of Windows 8 in comparison with the Windows 7 version

Windows 8 Feature Comparison With Windows 7

1)       Touch Screen Technology Blend with User Interface

It is clearly visible that the visual appeal of Windows 8 is much more than we saw with the Windows 7 version. Windows 7 also supported the touch screen feature. But in that the control systems were not flexible. In Windows 8, a new concept of ‘Start Screen’ has been developed. Faster responses for user inputs are guaranteed with the newly designed on-screen features. So keep on touching, you would resist taking your hands from your touch screen device running using Windows 8.

 2)       ARM Architecture

Windows 7 was designed for processors in the group of Intel X86 and the AMD chipsets. With Windows 8, the system has been developed with support for ARM Chipsets, which has been widely used with the modern devices.  The ARM Architecture is specially focused on matching the device instruction set, based on which the processors are developed. There’s no doubt that with Windows 8, Microsoft has started focusing on the portable device category for extending their popularity.

3)       Cloud

Windows 8 intentionally focuses on giving birth to a digital era that would integrate SkyDrive feature with the Cloud Storage concept. Now resource sharing has become simpler for users with the use of Windows 8. Your account settings and Windows 8 settings are all backed up on SkyDrive automatically. Moreover you will have a “single sign-in” feature that saves you from entering your username and password again and again in some of the applications.

4)       Windows Charms

The Windows 8 Charms gives direct access to the system controls from the Start Screen.  This helps users with search features literally on any screen of the operating system. This way Windows 8 has taken of the conventional search feature of the Operating System. This can easily be invoked by pressing the key combination “Win + C” or dragging your mouse pointer to the top-right or top-left of the screen. See on the left for the screenshot.

5)       Performance comparison

The Windows 8 Operating System kernel has a lot of background tweaks that do not get described in functions details or screenshots.  Windows 8 has developed strategies for effectively doing line organizing, and hence CPU performance has improved. It also runs less number of processes by default and eats up less memory as compared to Windows 7.
